One of my first questions to author and professional speaker Trina Dawkins Patterson was why she would write her first children’s book on bullying when a primary focus of her Cookie Movement organization is promoting abstinence.

Dawkins Patterson replied that they aren’t isolated issues — that bullying robs young girls of self-esteem, and a lack of self-esteem makes them more likely to be careless when it comes to sexual activity. "The way one feels about him or herself has a huge bearing on the choices that you make," she said. "Girls with low self-esteem tend to engage in sexual activity earlier than girls with high self-esteem."

The Woodbury mother of two boys said that her book, "A Tale of Two Cookies: A Message of Kindness and Acceptance," promotes self-confidence and friendship. (It has no direct or indirect reference to abstinence.) Dawkins Patterson used cartoon cookies, living in the land of Confection, to show young readers how bullying can be hurtful and how "kindness begets kindness."

"I’ve found that it was a message that was just needed," she said. "It’s not just about tolerating people who are different, but actually accepting them in the ways that they are."

Dawkins Patterson created The Cookie Movement organization when she lived in Indianapolis and worked with a non-profit organization that mentored young, expecting mothers. So many of these young women lacked self-esteem, she said, and furthermore couldn’t identify the reasons why they decided to be sexually active. The organization is the vehicle by which Dawkins Patterson offers presentations and programs for schools and youth organizations — sometimes about abstinence, but more often about building self-esteem and forming positive relationships.

The book’s storyline of a lemon cookie and an oatmeal cookie becoming friends — after some initial problems — originated with a poem that Dawkins Patterson presented to a Girl Scout troop. She encourages readers and parents to discuss the questions at the end of the book, which can help young readers to understand bullying and how to deal with it in their own lives. She is planning two more children’s books.

The Cookie Movement sounded like an odd name to me (given the potential double entendre with the word cookie) but Dawkins Patterson explained the thinking behind it. Kids are like cookies — and sometimes people only look at them externally without thinking about the ingredients that make them unique and special.

"You don’t see the egg, you don’t see the sugar, you don’t see the vanilla," she said. "There’s so much inside (children) that people don’t even recognize – that people don’t see."

And when it comes to the abstinence message, she tells youngsters to "save your cookies for the right glass of milk." Apparently, they should also avoid that "tall drink of water!" (Sorry, I couldn’t help the pun.)

Yes they won the game 1-0 through an uncharacteristic defensive error by goalkeeper, Modiri Marumo and his defence, but there was nothing to write home about. We all know how it was put across that they will bury Botswana under an avalanche of goals, but it turned out to be an exaggerated view devoid of the real strength of the Zebras.

And having followed the trend in major tournaments the world over, I think the media coverage of the build-up was a bit one sided. One sided in the sense that, what was generally projected was how the Zebras can contain Ghana, but not as to how can Ghana beat the compact play of Botswana.

As a result I tend to think we unwittingly forced the Zebras to adopt or concentrate more on its defensive abilities thereby weakening its attacking play.

I mean what are the likes of Pontsho Moloi and Othusitse Pilane doing in the squad if they cannot be played against ball playing teams as they are comfortable on the ball.

I am not suggesting anything, but I think a team like Zambia would perhaps have damaged Ghana. What I am saying is that, our transition from defence to attack still needs some fine-tuning as we ought to know how to exploit the spaces for the opponents. But having said that, it is no shame to say, ‘Bravo Zebras’. For a country or team making its debut, the Zebras did not disgrace or disappoint but lost graciously. We therefore need not lose heart even though our game tomorrow against Guinea is a must-win at all cost encounter. Even for guinea it will be a must win as well.

This means that it will be a very tense game with emotions running. On another note and in relation to the first game against Ghana there was a discernible inferiority complex from the media.

May be because of lack of experience as Ghana was projected as a colossus that nobody dare to challenge. I have a feeling that as members of the media, we did not do enough to build much confidence in the players themselves including the coach.

Believe you me, when it comes to big international events like this, the media can do a lot to calm the nerves of even the experts but because of the doubts, we had about Stanley Tshosane, instead of drumming more confidence in him, we instead perhaps threw a lot of self doubts questions.

The reason South Africa won the 1996 finals was partly due to a positive. I remember very well when renowned journalist, Mark Gleeson boldly wrote in Kick-off magazine why South Africa would win the competition.

The entire tabloid had positive stories, which were all aimed at lifting the morale and confidence of the players and the technical team. Given some of the challenges the local media still have, I just feel that we were a little short. Instead we resorted to worshipping Ghana than perhaps poking fun at them and also giving them cause to worry than for them to view us as absolute nonentities.

What came out though is that our coaches are as good as the million-dollar paid ones from Europe and elsewhere. Perhaps low self-esteem is the problem.

And, while I would like to see the Zebras advancing to the next round, it will be no train smash if the team fails, but basing on the display against Tunisia during the qualifiers and against Nigeria as well as the game against Ghana, the Zebras are in with a chance to qualify for Brazil 2014.

This is the Holy grail of football and where the real money is, so we need to project South Africa as just another team, nothing special about them.

I know for a fact that the South Africans will try to use their media to create self-doubt in our capabilities. The 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifiers will fiercely contested than may be the AFCON qualifiers. So, like I have suggested before, we should use these games as preparations for Brazil 2014.

This should give us an advantage against those countries that did not make it to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

This means that after AFCON, Botswana should raise its bar in terms of friendly games. The team need another training camp in Brazil, where it can be exposed to a variety of challenges, physique, technique and high tempo games. The Brazilian league has all these.

That said, it looks like Equatorial Guinea and Gabon 2012 is up for grabs. The pre-tournaments favourites, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Senegal still have to convince me that they have the hunger to go all the way. So far they have all disappointed and their mega bucks stars from Europe look frigid or a pale shadow of themselves.

The team that has impressed is Zambia and may be just like in 1994 the Chipolopolo will make it to the finals.

Locally, it looks like the new tournament to be played immediately after the AFCON finals – the Mascom Top 8 – has sent some teams on a recruitment frenzy of some sort. The two Gaborone giants, Gaborone United (GU) and Township Rollers – look the busiest in the market, with Rollers reportedly having released six players, while GU have lined up a lot of stars among them Kgololo Leteane of Extension Gunners.

The second round promises to be much tougher, but the no holds barred contest will be the Top 8.

It’s a new year and a new semester, and if your New Year’s resolution is to get out there, get involved and make a difference, you can work with Lifeline, through the Center for Community Outreach.

Lifeline is a program that partners KU students with kids from local middle schools and high schools for mentoring and tutoring sessions. The program also promotes self-esteem and healthy relationships for the kids involved, with both their tutor and their peers. This year, Lifeline is working with the Girl Scouts of America to teach girls at Lawrence Central Junior High how to develop healthy relationships and their self-esteem. The kids aren’t the only ones who benefit from this program, though. KU students can also improve their own lives by volunteering with this program.

“I think volunteering for Lifeline helps you develop your own self-esteem and self-worth,” says Mihan Lester, a junior from Shawnee and a volunteer with the program. “You’re helping students graduate from high school so that they can maybe go to college, which they might not have been able to [do] before. You are actually making a difference in someone’s life, which is great,” Lester says. Lifeline provides the opportunity for KU students to connect with each other through event planning and also to connect with the Lawrence community. “

As KU students, we’re kind of isolated on campus,” says Emily Lamb, a senior from Lawrence and director of CCO. “But by volunteering… you are reaching out to the community, and who knows what kind of difference you could make?” To learn more or to get involved with Lifeline, visit cco.ku.edu.

In the Buddhist tradition “Phansa” is the rainy season—typically July, August, and September. During this window of time, monks stay indoors to study, meditate, and teach. This practice stems from when Buddha stayed inside to avoid stepping on and killing insects and seedlings.

I’m fascinated by this tradition. However, with owning a healing practice and teaching, taking a three month hiatus simply isn’t prudent.

Last fall Terrill Welch over at Creative Potager posed the sprout question, “Where are you finding sublime bliss today?”

Shorty thereafter, Catie Manning over at As Told by CatMan – The Rose Bandit asked, “How do you get rid of stress?”

My answer to both was the same—in the shower.

It’s here that I take a mini Rain Retreat. Pulling in a Rubbermaid footstool, I sit with my back to the shower-head, and wholly relax as the hot water pelts my neck and shoulders, washing any physical tension right down the drain. The emotional tension melts away as I practice my personal version of metta:

I visualize myself as a smooth pebble that’s been tossed into a still pond. The pebble—me—produces a gentle ripple effect on the calm surface. The first time I say the metta, I start with myself. Then each consecutive time I replace “I” with the next person in my life—the next ring out—and so on.
