Capitals’ playoff chances dim with each loss

1329909385 31 Capitals’ playoff chances dim with each loss

RALEIGH, N.C. — Talk, talk, talk. What the Washington Capitals have said, over and over, is that every game is important right now. Every point means something.

And as much as players want to avoid the standings and focus, Troy Brouwer and others pointed out that self-awareness is essential this time of year. It might only be February, but scoreboard-watching time is here in ear-nest.

Watching the out-of-town scores has been a favorable endeavor for the Caps, as two teams they’re chasing, the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs, have struggled. And that’s what makes this rough road trip even rougher.

“We keep getting breaks, and other teams are helping us,” right wing Mike Knuble said after an embarrassing 5-0 loss Monday to the Eastern Conference cellar-dwelling Carolina Hurricanes. “You watch the standings, and it’s like nobody wants it. And that’s what’s frustrating. Because it’s right there for us, and it’s in our control, and somebody’s got to take it.”

It’s a tight race, with Washington always seemingly one big victory away from gaining confidence and a playoff spot. Yet the Capitals haven’t managed to win consecutive games in more than a month.

“There are chances, but with [the] effort like we have [Monday], we have no chance no matter who we play or what the standings say,” goaltender Tomas Vokoun said. “Just a terrible game. It’s hard to explain. It was just a bad game.”

The defeat at Carolina was tough to take because of two early goals and the obviously attainable points at stake.

“We can’t let teams like that get a good start on us, especially when we need these points. They’re so crucial,” Brouwer said. “Florida lost [Sunday], we were looking good, we were excited about today and then we come out and just flat. Just terrible.”

The Caps now will look to prevent a three-game losing skid Wednesday night at Ottawa.

According to coach Dale Hunter, the Caps will have left wing Alex Ovechkin in the lineup againstt the Senators. The captain played just 15:43 at Carolina, missed six minutes of the second period and could be seen limping around the locker room Monday night.

Ovechkin was given off Tuesday’s practice with what was called a “maintenance day.”

“He had an equipment problem, and we just give him a maintenance day today, so he should be good tomorrow,” Hunter said Tuesday.

The Caps certainly could use their leading scorer in what is virtually a must-win game game, especially with the Feb. 27 trade deadline approaching. A Senators victory would put them nine points head of Washington for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference, and a Caps loss would put them in quicksand in their push to make the playoffs.

Regardless of the Panthers‘ situation, the Caps’ inability to excel in important games is an issue.

“We’re not in a playoff spot. Of course there’s concern,” forward Jeff Halpern said. “We still have confidence, but of course there’s concern.”

Craig Finn Performs in the UBS Forum

1329906995 97 Craig Finn Performs in the UBS Forum

St. Paul, Minn. — Craig Finn has been an integral part of Minnesota music since his work in Lifter Puller during the 90s, and his subsequent turn as the frontman of The Hold Steady in New York created some of indie music’s most compelling and critically acclaimed records. Now Finn is taking a short breather from the full band approach to focus on a more personal and reflective style.

His debut solo album Clear Heart Full Eyes was written in New York City and recorded in Austin, creating a distinct brand of storytelling alternately rooted in vignettes of solitude and a sense of southern twang. His character development is still evident, but he notes that the narratives are simpler and comes from a much softer, quieter place.

Craig Finn stopped by Minnesota Public Radio’s UBS Forum for an intimate performance of these new songs and a chat with Mary Lucia.

Songs performed: "Apollo Bay," "Sarah, I’m Surrounded," "Jackson," and "Not Much Left."

Skillful people may wonder why Personal development is like this. You could attempt to work with them. You should be able to find some Personal Reflection Affirmations from some self improvement websites. They never moaned about their past nor allowed it to interfere with their present and thus they created their future the way they wanted it to be. At this stage, you put your plan into action. You ought to choose which personal development workshops that will help you get through this but also I'm the early bird when it relates to personal development books. I would imagine that I may be having a wrong-headed notion germane to personal development blog. Now compare this to a people development that warrants an environment for a personal development seminar. A choice of single or twin air-conditioned accommodation many with floor to ceiling glass leading onto private balconies, while others with window seats all enjoying the wonders of nature's paradise.

Cellrox Licenses Mobile Technology from Columbia University to Secure Personal and Business Personas on a Single Mobile Device

1329904602 30 Cellrox Licenses Mobile Technology from Columbia University to Secure Personal and Business Personas on a Single Mobile Device

Newswise — NEW YORK – February 20, 2012 – Cellrox Ltd. announced today the signing of a worldwide exclusive agreement with Columbia University to license certain mobile technology developed at Columbia that will enable corporate IT departments to securely accommodate the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend.

The growing popularity of using personal mobile devices to access corporate network data and applications, whether at work or home, creates severe security and management challenges for corporate IT departments.

Using virtualization technology developed at Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, Cellrox addresses the challenges of BYOD by allowing both corporate and personal individual “personas” to co-exist on a single smartphone. Employees have secure access to data and applications necessary for their jobs, while reducing security and compliance risks for corporate networks. This also alleviates the need for employees to carry two smartphones, knowing that their personal data and applications are kept separate.

“Today, most companies face the need to give employees the freedom to choose their own device. But it creates enormous security challenges for IT departments to prevent leaks from these kinds of devices,” said Omer Eiferman, CEO of Cellrox. “By creating an impenetrable virtual wall between the employee’s applications and the company’s data and applications, we can provide proactive security and application transparency.”

“Smartphones are now more powerful and popular than ever in business,” notes Calvin Chu, senior technology licensing officer for Columbia Technology Ventures, the technology transfer office of Columbia University. “We’re excited to see Cellrox put Columbia University virtualization technology towards solving the problems of enterprise compliance, security and maintenance.”

“Our lightweight virtualization makes it possible, for the first time, to securely run multiple virtual phones on a single smartphone in a manner that is transparent to applications and blazingly fast,” said Jason Nieh, Associate Professor of Computer Science at Columbia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, who oversaw the development of Columbia’s virtualization technology. “For example, each virtual phone can run any of the applications from Android Market, including 3D graphics-intensive games, with no visible performance difference from native hardware.”

Nieh’s paper on Mobile Virtualization won the prestigious “Best Paper Award” at the 2011 Association for Computing Machinery Symposium on Operating Systems Principles. The Symposium is the world’s premier forum for researchers and developers of the latest advances in computer systems technology.

Cellrox also has additional ties to Columbia through its co-founders, Oren Laadan, PhD and Ranit Fink, who are both alumni of the Department of Computer Science.

Genesis and My Blog???

1329903378 44 Genesis and My Blog???

Question for you: What does the bible story of Genesis have to do with my blog or my website?

Well, the quick answer is, of course, nothing at all!  There’s nothing specific in the bible about blogs, websites, or even computers, at least not that I’m aware of.  But as Jim Rohn used to say, I’m an amateur on the bible, so I could be wrong.

But here’s how they tie together for me.  I’ve been in kind of a crazy place for the last six months or so, maybe a little more.  There was a family death that triggered a lot of weird feelings, a six week lung infection that greatly interfered with my physical health (emotional too, really), and kind of a spiritual “desert period” that left me wandering aimlessly, trying to find rhyme or reason – some kind of purpose and meaning and passion in life.

Recently, I’ve been slowly making a “comeback”, wanting to start growing again in all the important areas of life.  One thing I decided was that I needed to sit down and start reading the bible again, and I thought, “no better place to start than at the beginning!”  So I sat down and started reading in Genesis.  I’ve read it numerous times, but this time a lot of ideas started popping into my head, and I started seeing a lot of parallels between my life and bible stories.

It occurred to me that Genesis is, of course, the story of creation, of the beginning of mankind, of the world we live in, made by this super-powerful creative Being, who decided to give us the gift of being made in His image!  Pretty cool!  Then I started thinking that so much of the bible, both old and new testaments, has to do with RE-creation, with people goofing up, asking God for help, and getting second chances to change their lives.  Some failed to take advantage of that, being stubborn, as humans tend to be.  Others, however, took the opportunity and ran with it, making fabulous changes and contributing to the world in a great way.

So I thought it was interesting that all these ideas started popping into my head, exactly when I was turning to God and the bible for some answers on how to make a new start.  Coincidence, right?     Well, among the ideas that came to me was the notion of this blog, this website, the businesses I’m in, and what to do with all this.  How do I present it?  How do I reach people?  How do I make it something that benefits the world around me?  Do I need three or four or five websites to represent all the different “facets” of ME?

Well, the answer that came to me was “no” – no, I don’t need a bunch of different sites (actually, I DO have other “internet locations”, but I only need one CENTRAL location).  I do different things and have different businesses, true, but I am still ONE unified person who does this variety of things.  And I do have at least one desire underlying all of them – I want to do what I can to make the world a better place.

So, I’ve decided that somehow, some way, I’m going to just be ME on here, and I’m going to use the blog for whatever it needs to be on any given day.  Some days it may be a spiritual lesson I’ve learned, that I want to share.  Other days it will be fitness related.  Yet other days there will be articles I write on a psychology topic.  I might pop in with a music video, a workout video, business training, personal development, book reviews, a guest speaker/writer, snow-ski pictures, whatever it happens to be.  I strongly desire and hope that just by being my real and genuine self, I will create lots of content that will be of benefit to people who visit here, whether it helps them start working out or solve a parenting problem or do better in their business – whatever.

So that’s it for now.  This was a long one, and I will work hard to keep others shorter.  I just wanted to re-introduce myself to the internet world and state my intention to help in whatever way I can, by being WHO I AM and DOING WHAT I DO, with whatever gifts, talents, experiences that I have and can use to make the world a better place.  Thanks for reading, and I hope you’ll come back and visit some more!

A “Born ins” challenge to develop a "post cult" personality.

1329902205 24 A “Born ins” challenge to develop a "post cult" personality.

A “Born ins” challenge to develop a post cult personality.

Mentally leaving the organization can be traumatic for a number of reasons. One of the biggest challenges for born-ins in finding their “pre cult” personality is that our entire personalities are based on the religion.  There is no such thing as a “pre cult” personality for us. Once you realize that the truth is a lie and that the things you have learned are false you look inside and realize that you are simply a shell of a person filled with sadness at being decieved.

As a “born in” you see the world in a very black and white way. Things are right or wrong, good or bad.  Your personal conscience is not really your own, it is built on the mandates of some man in Brooklyn who has declared what is right and wrong for you. As a “born in” you accept that and never learn how to make a personal decision based on facts, logic or reason. You simply obey.

Your approach to the future is different from the people around you. You have always operated under the assumption that there is no real future for you in this world. Soon God was going to wipe away sickness, poverty and death and all of your problems would be over.  This belief stunted your long term view and made goals such as financial stability, higher educational opportunities and retirement oddly unappealing despite the sound logic and rationale behind them.

As a “born in” you might have developed a social disability that prevents you from becoming too close to anyone who is “worldly”. This same disability at the same time affects your relationship with those within the faith. You are often times on guard about what you say and the thoughts that you express for fear that you become labeled as weak or bad association.  All of your relationships are superficial at some level because inside you know that there might be the chance that you will have to cut-off a friendship if the organization demands it. Why get too close to someone that you might have to shun?  This caution results in having few close friends that you can share honest thoughts and feelings with.  This condition is tantamount to social purgatory or limbo at the best.

Complicating matters for many is the fact that loved ones are still trapped within the cult. For many of us these loved ones such as our husbands, wives, and children make the shell of a life that we have worth living. What do you do about this?

So since so much of your personality is based on the dogma of the organization it can be a challenge to start from scratch in building your own life.  I am in that position as are many here. These are the questions that I ask myself to try to fill in this shell.

What do I love to do? What makes me laugh? Where do I want to be in 10 years, 20, or 30, or 50 (hopefully)?  What type of people do I want to be friends with? What are personal qualities that I value? If I died today, what would I want people to say about me? How do I give back to my community in ways that are measurable? What can I do to make sure my kids are raised without a “cult personality”?

Hopefully one day I will be a person with a “post cult” personality. I want to be someone who looks for the best in others, who inspires others and who has more laugh wrinkles than frown lines. I want to live my life without fear and I want to die with dignity and no regrets.

It is a process I realize. I feel that many who are born ins are in the same position. The challenge is trying to figure out how to build a personality that never really existed?

I set out on a walk, what I received was clarity, and for a very long time a clear, focused, calm mind (what I needed at that time). If yes, read on! The parents use him/her as the family mascot, assigning him/her adult roles without any appreciation. I may not be incoherent about it. They're sure why it came out that way. This little world is full of weird party crashers and Personal development dabblers are worst of this lot. You only run into trouble when your intentions become confused, cancelled or reversed because of your other thoughts. By virtue of what do compadres save choice personal development seminar items? You benefit most often with continuous training to look deep inside and reflect "Why am I doing this, what do I want to accomplish, when will I complete the first task at hand?" But here's the funny part about Personal Development - we flat out, don't know, what we flat out don't know!

Kelly McParland: Tea Party may have passed its best-before date

1329898570 47 Kelly McParland: Tea Party may have passed its best before date

A key goal of the Tea Party when it stormed into Washington was to bring down Barack Obama, on the theory that the President was a failure and they were there to fix things.

But barely 15 months since those mid-term elections, the Tea Party itself has little to chalk up in the way of success, unless you count bringing the business of Congress to a grinding halt. With nine months to go before the next round in the never-ending U.S. election cycle, Congress is less popular than ever, American government is derided as dysfunctional,  and Republicans spend more time attacking one another than they do the Democrats.

Mitt Romney, the favourite to win the nomination to face Obama in November, spent $15 million last month just on TV ads denouncing Newt Gingrich, his closest competitor.  Gingrich, running as an outsider from both Washington (where he spent his entire career) and his own party (of which he used to be Speaker), now includes Republican party leaders among the enemy elites he says are out to destroy him. Former Republican nominees and party heavyweights are lined up to block him from knocking off Romney, but he says he’ll stick to it to the bitter end, even if it means cleaving the party in two.

The fact that Gingrich is the Tea Party’s favoured candidate demonstrates how diminished its clout has become. Alarmed at the damage caused by Republicans’ internal divisions,  Speaker John Boehner and House majority leader Eric Cantor publicly declared a truce between their warring factions. Cantor’s  Tea Party enthusiasts view Boehner as a old-guard moderate, and their respective staffs viewed one another as rivals rather than allies in the war against the White House. So open was the hostility, that Obama felt safe in mocking the rivalry during a recent appearance, joking that Boehner had outfoxed Cantor in gaining a seat at the head table.

Far from the revolutionary reforms the Tea Partiers vowed to impose on Washington, the capital seems less effective than ever.  The partiers most notorious achievement was to turn Obama’s request for a higher borrowing limit — usually a routine affair — into a near-death experience which brought the country to the brink of defaulting on its debts. Though further weakening Obama’s image, the stunt was far more damaging to Congress, which saw its favourability rating fall towards single digits.  Humbled by public dissatisfaction,  the Republican agenda for the run-up to November is far less ambitious.

Absent for now is a big, contentious docket similar to last year’s, which included the goal of writing new health care legislation to replace the Obama administration’s law. A long-promised overhaul of the tax code seems out of reach. When Representative Eric Cantor, the Virginia Republican and majority leader, issued a memo this week laying out the body’s initial legislative agenda, a centerpiece was a modest tax cut for small businesses.

Tea Party-backed governors elected in 2010 are struggling with similar difficulties. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker faces a recall vote after opponents turned in more than one million signatures in a campaign to oust him. In addition, five of his pre-gubernatorial aides and associates have been charged with felony offences ranging from embezzlement to child enticement.

It’s not much of a record for a party that rode into town boasting it would soon save America. With signs of recovery in the economy — the latest unemployment figures show joblessness is back to the level of Obama’s first months –  and Obama’s favourability ratings inching upwards, the Tea Partiers’ proclaimed goal of driving the president from office remains an uphill climb. It took three years between the original Boston Tea Party and the Declaration of Independence, and even longer to win the war. Whether this generation of revolutionaries even survives that long may be open to question.

Understand how important this question is -- it takes away the limiting beliefs most teachers place on themselves, when they think about what they'd like to get out of their profession. Don't force it. Personal development does not need any work. It is a very dangerous thing to do. Can I get a witness? Fate can have a notable role in my future. The idea of Entrepreneur personal development includes entrepreneur self-development and development of other business members relate to business. This is a book that is just as relevant today as in 1902. The Eden Program is the foundation of everything they do. I was amused. This was a flawless goal for consumers. Under these circumstances, of course I wouldn't. You will be able to shape your Personal development to best serve your interests. If your answer is yes to all questions, then you must know that these personal development gurus are actually industry experts, professionally trained to help you move on to greater heights. Know you personally; I have no idea what you?e searching, seeking or what you feel as though you are missing (if anything). Unfortunately there only a few places that you can go to if you need to get a personal development program. I wanted a new look for personal development center. Sometimes I'll read in respect to personal development software and I honestly have no feeling what it is all about and you won't know if you don't try.

History and Relevance of Kundalini Yoga

Mindful Eating: A Teacher Responds to Readers

1329891379 60 Mindful Eating: A Teacher Responds to ReadersJennifer May for The New York TimesA mindful meal at the Blue Cliff Monastery.

Readers have posted comments on Jeff Gordinier’s article on mindful eating, along with questions for Dr. Jan Chozen Bays, a pediatrician and meditation teacher in Oregon. Dr. Bays, the author of ”Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food,” responded to a first batch of comments; post yours in the comments section below, or tweet us at @nytdining.

News Flash — Mindful eating has been practiced for thousands of years by Jews. Prayer of thanks depends on the contents of the food, with multiple requirements on preparation, etc. Not sure why it’s described here as Buddhist, per se. — philiphdc, Washington, D.C.

Yes, you are right. Mindful eating doesn’t belong to any religious tradition. The Jewish tradition of blessing the food and wine at Shabbat is a beautiful example of how to bring our awareness to what we are eating and who labored to bring it to us. It makes us aware that our food is a gift and eating it with awareness in a sacred activity.

Way boring. It is easy to make delicious food from the best, healthy ingredients, and including wine, So that there is a lot of talk, some yelling, and lots of fun. Those pictures do not look fun. Buddhists need to laugh, and yell a bit more. — Johnny D., Washington State

Healthy ingredients — yes! As Michael Pollan says, eat real food, not processed “food-like substances.” It’s actually very interesting, and even fun, to eat slowly and with full awareness. You don’t have to do it for the entire meal. At our monastery we eat in silence until seconds are passed, and then we talk. We do laugh quite a bit, too, but if you like yelling at the table, a monastery is not the place to find it.

I notice when I actually pay attention to my food, eating mindfully, I eat far less and feel satiated. I’m unlearning unhealthy eating habits, so this article is an affirmation. — Joe, Portland, Me.

Many people have discovered this, too, that when they eat mindfully, they become aware of satisfaction, which is different from being full — and definitely different from being stuffed! One young woman who attended a mindful eating retreat later told me that she lost 40 unwanted pounds just by checking in with her body as she ate, and stopping when her body “felt at peace.”

The Hindu scripture, Bhagavad-Gita, instructs its readers that food and meals are provided to enable us to achieve our purpose in life. Perhaps if we seek meaningful goals in our lives, we can let go of food to satisfy our needs, appetites and desires that cannot even be fulfilled with food anyway. — Dorothy, Rhode Island

This is so important. I often say “a hole in the heart cannot be filled with food.” But we persist in trying, eating when we are anxious, eating when we are sad, eating when we are lonely. If we learn to distinguish real cellular hunger from the hunger of the heart, we can choose when to eat to nourish our body, and when to do things to nourish our heart — like calling a friend, or taking the dog for a walk, or taking a hot bath.

It’s not a good idea to try to block or suppress your desire for a particular food. You will still want what you want, and when you finally give in you will be prone to overindulgence.

Mindful eating deals with appreciation and gratitude. Most of us live lives that are so fast paced that we fail to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. We get so caught up in the business of the day and everything passes us by so fast. Mindful eating is just paying attention to the experience. And when you pay attention you can tell when enough is enough. You won’t take more than you need and your body will be healthier and happier for it.

Mindful eating is a gateway meditation that might lead to such things and mindful interaction with others. Mindfulness of emotional states, and mindfulness of our responses to what we feel. If it is directed inwardly you will find nothing. But if you use meditation to help you feel and connect with others then you will discover a whole new world. — Benny Acosta, Wichita, Kan.

I couldn’t have said it better.

Mindful eating, or mindful any other activity, no harm in that. But it has nothing to do with Enlightenment, which is beyond concepts and activities. This is beautifully articulated in the Heart Sutra, a very short very famous and very beautiful Buddhist scripture you can find online or in bookshops. —  Salieres, New Hampshire

Mindfulness is one of the seven factors of enlightenment. It leads to enlightenment and is also the natural result of enlightenment. You are correct, however, mindfulness by itself is not enlightenment. Insight into the true nature of reality — which is beyond concepts — is essential. Many Buddhist monasteries chant the Heart Sutra before meals.

As someone who cooks for a living, I witness the full spectrum of eating patterns. Special diet requests can generally fly out the window when anyone is faced with a fresh baked apple pie. I call it the apple pie test! How can a chef courteously and mindfully serve guests who “fudge” on their requests for special foods at a whim? Sustainability and rising food costs create demanding parameters, yet customers feel entitled to behave as if always right. No one wants to be the food police, yet what to do to provide delicious, plentiful right foods for all being served? —  Rebeka, British Columbia

Your comment made me laugh. One monastery told me that on the first day of an event, the “special diet” line has 10 out of 50 people, the second day 3, and by the third day everyone has switched to the “apple pie” line. The monastery contemplated putting plastic food replicas out for the “special diet dishes” after the third day.

Some foods are designed by their manufacturers to combine a certain mouth feel, saltiness and sweetness that some of us find addicting. Are there any ways to block the body’s cravings for these types of food? I suppose I am thinking of the way that alcoholics use antabuse or drug addicts use methadone. — LKF, New York

[In reply to commenter above] One can try not so much to block it as to be fully aware of the consequences of eating it while in the midst of that activity. Much in the way smoking-cessation programs train participants to think about what, actually, they are getting out of that cigarette they are smoking. When I realized that I was getting nothing good from the cigarette, not even psychological comfort, I managed to taper off and eventually stop, no substitute drugs needed. If it works for a drug like nicotine, it could probably work for salt and sugar. The crunch is easily replaced with other, less harmful foods with similar mouth feel. Visualization of both positive and negative consequences might also help as part of the self-teaching process. — Suzanne F, Lower Manhattan

We crave salt and sweet because these were in short supply throughout our evolution. Kingdoms rose and fell based upon whether they had resources like salt mines or sugar cane plantations. Sugar gives us a quick energy burst, and even fetuses in the uterus will swallow more amniotic fluid if it is made sweeter. Salt is a necessary component of our blood, one that our bodies cannot manufacture. Famine was very common in our evolutionary history, and fat gave us a long-term fuel source, protection against lean times and possible starvation. Thus we crave these three, but now we have unlimited access to them! The processed food industry spends millions tinkering with the exact amounts of these three needed to keep us buying and eating. In mindful eating we don’t forbid any food, but often, when you eat a processed food mindfully, you may find that it actually doesn’t taste so good (try eating one Cheeto very slowly, letting it melt in your mouth). Or, you may find that just a few will satisfy. If I stop and eat mindfully, I can have a party with 12 chips, and I can make a small Ritter bar (white chocolate with hazelnuts) last a week. Yum!

Step2. Organization Next, you should establish for yourself an organized office-space in your home that mirrors your setup, within reason, at the office. The underpinning meaning to Personal development is Personal development. This has been hit and miss although I get how difficult it is to spend that type of money. It is significant to address personal development goals because we might want to have some more personal development goals at work examples. The consciousness or mood with which Jim acts makes all the difference; his specific actions are secondary. This can be letter writing, romance ideas that I'll research online for inspiration, and possibly a forum where site visitors can interact and share even more ideas! Any tool that will help you to be in the moment without any distractions will be the Most Powerful Personal Development Tool on Earth. Membership would be essential, and teaching, mentoring and personal contribution would be part of the makeup. Therefore when you intend to attract something into your life it is natural and normal for it to come to you. The majority of individuals would not take almost the same concern in reveling in its smells, flavors, and gentle taste even though it's the identical drink.
